Read on to find out if this treatment could be right for you.
What is vaginal laxity?
Vaginal laxity is a looseness of the vaginal canal, often caused by pregnancy and child birth. The tissue in the vagina stretches during childbirth and for some women, it does not return to its former condition. This can lead to urinary incontinence, and/or decreased sexual function and satisfaction. Personal relationships can also suffer due to the decline in sexual function. Vaginal laxity can have a big impact on a woman’s happiness and wellbeing. You may notice symptoms such as:
- Tampons slipping or not fitting as snugly
- Air passing from the vagina
- Decreased arousal or physical sensation during intercourse
- Changes in the strength of, or ability to reach, orgasm
- Lower self-confidence or sexual self-image
- Stress urinary incontinence (SUI)
What is stress urinary incontinence?
Stress urinary incontinence is when urine leaks when the bladder is under pressure; for example, when you cough, laugh, jump or run. It is a very common problem, and is also more likely to occur with increasing age. For women with urinary incontinence, the thought of bouncing on a trampoline or running for the bus fills them with dread!
What is Geneveve and how does it work?
Geneveve is a non-surgical treatment. It is an effective treatment for both vaginal laxity and stress urinary incontinence. It works by using radiofrequency waves (RF) to stimulate the tissue in the vagina. Just like skin, vaginal tissue is made up of collagen fibres. During childbirth these tissues can overstretch, which damages the collagen. This process can also occur naturally as we age. The RF energy in Geneveve encourages natural collagen production, which tightens and strengthens the tissue, in turn improving both urinary incontinence and sexual function. RF has been used safely for medical treatments for over 75 years.
The RF is delivered by a small probe inserted into the vagina. No anaesthetic is required. Patients have described it as a tingling or hot or cold sensation. Treatment takes just 30 minutes, and you need only one treatment to get results. Another benefit is that there is no downtime: you can get straight back to work and exercise immediately after the treatment. However please note that you should not use tampons or have intercourse for 48 hours afterwards.
How quickly can I expect to see results?
You can expect to see results from around 30 days post-treatment, as the collagen begins to generate. Studies have shown an initial rebuilding in collagen production followed by a slower sustained effect. The best results are obtained around 90 days post-treatment. Women in these studies reported an improved level of sensation, arousal, lubrication and orgasm, as well as improvement in the symptoms or stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
One study showed that 90% of women treated had a significant, sustained tightening for 12 months post-treatment. The benefits from just one treatment last for at least 12 months.
Who can benefit from Geneveve?
Geneveve is suitable for anyone over the age of 18, and new mothers at least six months post-delivery and/or post-nursing.
Who is Geneveve not suitable for?
Geneveve is not an option if you have any form of implantable electrical device such as a pacemaker or automated implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD). Other contraindications, such as pregnancy and planned pregnancies, will be discussed at your initial consultation.
